Very interesting but disturbing story about Michael Bentine in the RAF:

He was a crack shot and helped set up the SAS counter terrorism wing.

Spike Milligan, fed up with him being brilliant at everything, got an Olympic fencer to take him on at fencing, Bentine had him pinned in a minute.

His life really was one of a kind.

Being There is still my favourite film. Just so incredibly clever.

Sellers was a horrible man by all accounts but I think he was one of our greatest comic actors.

Not sure his film "The Party" would get shown much these days - but very funny
____________

Or Murder By Death.

Which is a vastly underrated film that should be a classic.

Utter genius, but a totally fucked up and dysfunctional human being.

An undeniable talent - and as some no-mark said earlier Chance Gardener in Being There is an episode in superb character acting - I don't think I can recall a finer, more believable performance of someone so ordinary; knocks Dustin Hoffman's Rainmain into a cocked hat, that's for sure.

But I dug out (on You Tube) some of his stuff, and he always struck me as being a little (lot) reserved - especially in his Parkinson appearances.

I think he always saw himself in the shadow of Peter Ustinov - another undoubtedly excellent talent - and could see no way of turning his own talent into something unique, that Ustinov had not already covered.

FC.

Very true,he used his voice to great effect, I'd imagine he'd get paid a fortune these days for doing voices in Disney Pixar etc films.

Shame he died - would have stopped Brexit for certain - 100% FACT.

What?

Wrong thread?

Well the latest abortion of a Brexit thread has now been locked, so I may as well post it on here so as to deny the Knoblerone the attention/response he was so blatantly seeking.

I liked the story of him stopping a guy from jumping suicide bridge in archway whilst in his roller.

He's funny if you think people doing a sketch and can't hide their own laughter is funny.

Superb in Pink Panther and Dr Strangelove but not outstanding in much else.

Funny bloke. Probably very good company if out on the piss. But comedy genius? Not for me.

Re: Peter Sellers: Was he a comedy genius or what?
Very interesting but disturbing story about Michael Bentine in the RAF:

Once in the RAF he went through flying training. He was the penultimate man going through a medical line receiving inoculations for typhoid with the other flight candidates in his class (they were going to Canada to receive new aircraft) when the vaccine ran out. They refilled the bottle to inoculate him and the other man as well. By mistake they loaded a pure culture of typhoid. The other man died immediately, and Bentine was in a coma for six weeks. When he regained consciousness his eyesight was ruined, leaving him myopic for the rest of his life. Since he was no longer physically qualified for flying, he was transferred to RAF Intelligence and seconded to MI9, a unit that was dedicated to supporting resistance movements and helping prisoners escape. His immediate superior was the Colditz escapee Airey Neave.

Barker and Sellers both got to their positions from opposite directions. Barker was a very good actor who thrived being funny. Sellers was a comic was trying to be actor.

Would go with Side's view, he was funny, especially as Inspector Clouseau, but wouldn't say he stood out as some kind of genius. Funnier than Steve Martin? Not really.

Re: Peter Sellers: Was he a comedy genius or what?
Found him funny in parts and you knew a good few were going to be happy if something was in was on, but there were a lot more other comedians I’d rather be watching in character….like Ronnie Barker as Fletcher….this is not a knock though as comedy is broad choice and should not be judged unless the many say otherwise.
